Jeff,
I can't help but giving a quote from Saab factory manual (#338533 2:1 Basic Engine M1981-88, page 022-16):
Oil
Recommended grade: [...Saab Original Turbo Oil bla-bla-bla...] or oil to API Service SF/CD, SF/CC or CCMC G3/PD1
Viscosity: SAE 10W-30 or 10W-40. In markets where these viscosities are not available, 15W-40 or 15W-50 oil may be used. Synthetic engine oil for winter or year-round use SAE 5W-30
Oil pressure
Oil pump pressure-reducing valve opens at:
B202 3.6-5.2 bar (52-75 psi)
Warning light comes on at: 0.3-0.5 bar (4.4-7.2 psi)
Oil pressure at 2000 rpm, engine temperature of 80C (176F) and 10W-30 oil: minimum of 2.7 bar (39 psi)
As for the recommended oil specs, here's another quote. This time it comes from page #72 of C900 M1993 owner's manual (usually they put it into the glovebox):
Grade of oil:
Turbo engines:
Saab Turbo engine oil or oil to API SG, SF/CD or SF/CC.
Other engines:
API SG, SF/CD or SF/CC.
Since Saab Turbo engine oil and oils to API SG and SF contain suitable additives for engines and gearboxes we recommend against the use of additional additives.
Viscosity:
SAE 10W/30, 10W/40, 5W/30 or 5W/40. If these viscosities are unobtainable, 15W/40 oil may be used. When using the car regularly in temperatures below -20C, oil with viscosity of 5W/30 must be used.
When using 5W-oils, they have to be of the fully- or semisynthetic type.
Good luck,
Zig
P.S.
If you've got a flashing (even intermittent, not constant) oil pressure light, then I'd start with checking the engine oil level, the oil pressure switch and if they're fine, then I'd start preparing for engine overhaul. But your maintenance rules may vary.
Adding the oil pressure gauge is a good idea with whatever condition your engine is currently having.
