The autobox is a Borg Warner transmission, but it's a really old design and pretty touchy. Ford type F is the ATF specified in the manual, and it's important to only use that and change it regularly (most probably weren't and that's probably one of the bigger reasons so many fail)... To be honest, the manual gear box is probably also the weak point on the car, but that's mainly because most everything else about the c900 is rock solid... stuff wears out, but they are really tough little cars... lots of fun to own!
If you take the car for a test drive, pay attention to the shift points of the autobox. It is common for the lowest 2-3 shift point to creep up as they age. If the lowest you can make it shift is 40mph or more (ie when you are really light on the throttle), the autobox is possibly getting worn (or kickdown is misadjusted, but that is also bad)... they should be able to go into 3rd as low as 30-35mph... shift points for a turbo might be different (I'm thinking NA), but I doubt they are higher. The shift points are never as smooth as in a 5 speed 9-5. They are defined: you will be able to feel them.
good luck!
