In the C900 autobox, it's usually the torque converter that gives it up, making the gearbox worthless. I have a '90 Turbo vert that I rescued from the crusher down in Charlotte, NC. The car had only 125K showing on the odo and the body was straight and rust free. The interior was trashed and people had been picking at her for some time. I cajoled the fellow who owned the shop where she had died into swapping the dead autobox for a five speed. Indeed, the torque converter was why the gearbox failed at such a low mileage. After getting the car to run, we replaced 99% of the interior and the leaky roof pistons (which live in the quarter panels) and, long story made short, she runs, drives and looks pretty good. Her clearcoat is failing, so I do need to have her painted, but otherwise, she's a gem. The C900 CV is the ONLY Saab convertible to own, in my opinion. The NewGen was nice, as was the original 9.3, but there is just something so graceful about a C900 vert rolling down the road.

You might want to run the top mechanism to ensure that it works smoothly and that the top motor (under the rear seat) wasn't run dry at some point. You can't eyeball the roof pistons....you find out that they're leaking when you find puddles of fluid by the rear wheels.

Wise choice of Saab.....I hope you decide to buy the car and enjoy it!!
