If you are talking about your 87 8V car I doubt if you have that rubber coupling shown in the picture. You have a rubber coupling that can tear loose and you need to get under the car to get a good look at that. To remove the upright shift lever you should be in neutral. You are correct that in 3rd gear the lever is at an angle and will bind in the housing when you try to remove in. If you shift into 3rd and the alignment holes line up you are properly adjusted. There are wear points that can cause sloppiness. The coupling starting to tear, the shift shaft bushing in the front of the console, the plastic balls you will see when you remove the shift lever.
