I'll second the suggestion of the rubber bushing at the nose of the shifter assembly. I've seen a lot more of those being the source of sloppy shifting than the connector.
Remove the accordion piece between the shifter console and the storage bin and look down at the shift rod. If it moves side-to-side instead of rotating as you move the shifter from side to side, the bushing is deteriorated from exposure to the grease in the shifter assembly.
