...the deck came installed I bought my '89... I gave the deck away to a friend... so I could find out... It was mostly that silvery grey colour and had a volume knob you could push in so it'd be "flush". The display lit up like a baboon's backside whenever it was on. I should mention the shootout in the 900 was using the built-in amps in all 3 HUs........ all "rated" around "45wpc", but we know how that is with head units.
I am used to a fairly decent home setup (Sonic Frontiers/Pass Labs/Thiel) so car audio has always seemed to me to be something I could blow a ton of money without ever achieving a great result, so I just want something works and that doesn't sound like absolute garbage... I imagine that AutoEQ stuff is pretty cool but while it can flatten frequency response, time alignment and phase coherence in a car is a total write off, which IMO is more important...
The 9000 is a much nicer place for a car stereo than a 900... way quieter, and way better front speaker locations... I can't really see any practical way to get great sound in a 900 without moving speakers around and I refuse to screw with interior cosmetics, other than the head unit, obviously... heck, the front left speaker is pretty much to the right of your head when you're driving along... ridiculous.
The main thing with the Nak in a C900 for me is that it looks "right" enough.
My favourite car stereo I've had was in my old '93 Aero with the CD-400 feeding a PA-504 powering old blue Kappas all around, no sub, cobbled together off Craigslist about 10 years ago.... Fav I've heard was a Nak CD-700 with all a/d/s/ amps and 3-series component speakers plus a 10" sub in a BMW E32. Nice........... but $$$$!!!
