Solder is always a mechanically stronger connection, BUT I have read and been told that QUALITY crimp connectors are every bit as electrically good, and in many situations better - especially if you're a crap solderer. ;) Lots of folks have called me out on this, and I have zero electrical training, but I *can* point to the fact that every connector in every Saab is crimped on, and that c900s have numerous examples of crimped connectors at ground points or multi-wire joints. There just a couple examples of soldered connections in Saabs, and they seem to do quite well electrically.
Personally, for stuff that's going to get buried in a harness somewhere that I'll forget about, I use solder and 3M heat shrinkable polyolefin tube. For stuff that's in plain sight or will receive routine attention, I tend to use insulated, heat-shrinkable butt connectors from Waytek or Wiring Products. In the case of crimp connectors, it's key to have a good crimper. Buying an Ideal crimper instead of relying on the $5 Sears crimper changed my life. ;) I'm sure the Sears thing is fine for household work, but for automotive situations it just doesn't produce a solid result.
