To Seig's points:
-DOT 4 complete flush, probably 2 years ago (sat for 1.9 years for 5 speed conversion)
- Rear calipers were sourced from NAPA, which is in my opinion the best Auto replacement part company in the States (that is non EURO specific). FWIW, the car did EXACTLY the same lock/swerve prior to the rear caliper replacements & adjustments. Troubleshooting 101....look elsewhere!
- Both rear calipers were either turned flat at my local $10 a wheel shop, or new. Gotta check records to be sure.
Now some questions:
1. Isn't the ABS ECU under the back seat on a convertible? I know where fuses are at in the RH front fender cavity aft of the tire. All fuses are fine.
2. Seig's suggestion about a line failure is interesting.....I bought new hoses for the rear calipers, but didn't install because the line set on the rear axle was too rusty to separate. I will inspect closely for a possible flat spot (pressure drop) to the RR.
3. This car has also had episodes of NON power brakes, typically after it sat for months. In those cases (2) I had both ANTI LOCK and BRAKE FLUID lights lit together. There was clearly no ABS accumulator function, no pump. All I did was unplug / replug all the fuses in their positions and unplug the cable connectors at the ABS pump system, and both times function restored. There is nearly NO BRAKES when you have this condition. Believe it or not, I limped the car home 30 miles from a paint shop with the first brake failure! :(
4. One of the front ABS speed sensors looks a little thread bare; the cable sheath in the wheel well is losing it's skin, and you can see the shielded cover for the wires. However, since the rear system is a single ABS output line, I can't see how an intermittent front input would cause ONE SIDE of the rear to lock.
Wish I had a pressure gauge so I could see what actual pressure I have at each rear brake hose..
Thanks folks for some good thoughts. I will likely RE bleed the system and power down/up the ABS ECU, just as soon as I confirm where to do so. Would'nt pulling the relays should do it? Will look at the elec. schematic to see .....
