I would say that owning these cars now, you pretty much need to have some DIY mechanic skills or at least some interest in it... or deep pockets and a good SAAB tech. I say that not because they are that expensive, but at this age, to get them sorted initially does mean going through almost everything and that is costly if you can't do some of it yourself. Even low mileage good running cars that are mostly original, actually need tons of stuff done (hoses, some wiring etc just goes with age). You can't buy these now without a slush fund allocated, but that is true of any used car really.
The overheating is probably just a cooling system issue, so drain, replace the hoses (or at least anything that looks questionable), tstat, probably rad, fan switch (go for 82 degree on both tstat and switch), Zerex G05 coolant, and you should be fine. Transmission could be a bigger job.
Before you spend any serious money on the car, I would really thoroughly check it over for rust. If it came from NY rather than down south, there may still be rust. Look for bumps under the car, in the wheel wells, pull up the carpet from the door sills and look at the floors, look in the trunk, in and around the tail lights, the shock towers, battery are etc etc. If the car really is rust free, don't even consider driving it through Chicago winters without oil spraying it.
If you do find it is really rust free, look for someone selling a rusted out spg with a good motor + tranny. Transplanting that might be about as cheap as fixing yours, and then you get 40-50 more hp and lower end torque. All that = more smiles! The 2.0L 16 valve NA is indestructible but pretty slow by today's standards. A turbo would make a huge difference (even as a LPT).
I didn't realize folks would be interested in a non-turbo for that kind of $$. I think I will keep holding on to my 2 as long as I can I guess!
good luck!
