Yes, Mercedes no longer uses G05. They have moved onto G48 and it's what goes into all Mercedes that previously specified G05.
None of these coolants are magical. None of them are more effective at shedding heat, and in fact many of them are inferior at shedding heat and result in higher cooling system pressures. All coolants will eventually turn aggressive and damage the system if not replaced.
All of these coolants are designed to extend service life (5, 10, "lifetime," etc.) and in some cases reduce environmental impact. The specific problem with Dexcool is that it can react negatively with other fluids, plastics, and seals which is why you should never use it on a car not designed for it.
If you use 1980's green stuff, and change it every two years like you're supposed to, and use distilled water and not tap water like you're supposed to, you'll never have problems. And, you really can't even get '80s green stuff anymore... the green stuff that Prestone sells is a totally different formulation than it was even ten years ago and is chemically similar to all the newer coolants, which is why it's "compatible with all makes and all colors."
Personally, I wouldn't hesitate one second to use Prestone. And I don't. It's all I ever use on cars that don't explicitly call for something else. With correct installation and timely replacement, it's as good as anything else you can buy.
