My 1987 900 Turbo has been acting up lately and I don't why. Therefore, I'll tell the whole story and maybe a great expert on this fabulous board can help.
First, I would like to say my car is a very sound car and has been taken care very well. It has 125,125 miles on it. I put new tranny in it last year so I would like to keep it. My car is also all stock parts.
For those who don’t have time to read all of this story, I summarized my situation down at the bottom. I was driving around yesterday to find that my car didn't have the usually punch. When I tried to accelerate hard in 3rd the car just wouldn't do it. And sometimes when I was cruising around 30mph in 3rd the turbo would go full yellow in boost and the car would accelerate like I was at WOT. And when I would start out in 1st the car would act like something was grabbing (parking brake?). This scared my passengers and me. If I didn’t give the car any more gas than usual the car wanted to stall. So I just gave it more gas and after 2500rpms the grabbing would stop. It also did this in 2nd. I thought it was the parking brake being froze (I live in Spokane WA and the temperature is around 28) so at a stop I applied the parking brake and released it several times. This did nothing and the car continued to grab while in 1st and 2nd. I decided to stop because I thought I had and still think I have a serious problem. I got out of the car and I could smell something burning….I thought it was that burnt parking brake smell. I let the car sit for an hour before leaving again. The car continued to do this for the rest of the trip home about 5 city miles. Being very worried for the car I tried to get it home. On the way home I saw a huge cloud of exhaust build up behind me at a stoplight. After reading the posts about the dreaded blue exhaust, I thought to myself, “oh #$@* my turbo is gone”. I could not see the color of the exhaust because it was 11:00pm. After that, I had no power; I could not go up Stevens Ave, a moderate hill, faster than 30mph. Before this acting up I could go up that hill easily and besides even little Metros can go 35mph. I drove the rest of the way home at that speed.
But the interesting thing is that I brought my car to a Saab certified mechanic for an oil change last Tuesday. I have used this mechanic since 1994, I believe he has done a good job. My mechanic put in 4.5qts Mobil 1 Synthetic 15W-50 and 10W-30. He does his usual inspection and found two upper radiator hose leaking. He replaced those and refilled. He also tightened the right front cooling fan mount. Then he looked up on his computer and found many items over due some include: “Scope Fuel Pumps, Air Filter, Spark Plugs, Brake Fluid, Fuel Filter, Remove Ignition module and clean”.
Today I went out to start my car and it seemed to me that the blue smoke is gone while idling. I checked the oil to be amazed to see some yellow crap in there. It was all over the dip stick and this really scares me. And it is only ¾ full. This car has never ever burned one drip oil. I’m not going to drive the car anymore, and since the oil change I have only driven 50 miles. And since that situation has occurred I only have driven a maximum of 8 miles. I hope I did not ruin my car.
So to summarize:
1. My 1987 900 Turbo grabs and bucks in 1st and 2nd gears.
2. My car has no power
3. The car would unusually boost even when I am cruising around 30mph.
4. I got out and smelled a burning smell
5. Left for home and same situtation as earlier that day
6. Saw a huge cloud of exhaust build up behind me
7. Now I have LITTLE power
8. Took to mechanic last Tuesday for oil change, put in Mobil 1 Synthetic ___15W-50 and 10W-30
9. Checked oil today found yellow crap and it is ¾ full.
What is wrong with my favorite car? Did my mechanic do this? Did I ruin my car?
Thank you so much for taking your time and helping my favorite car.
This is the best board ever.
Thanks
