It sounds like RS is definitely on the right track... The only thing I'd quibble about is the 15w-50 - I don't know where you live, but in California that wouldn't be too odd, especially if it's synthetic. But 4.5q is definitely too much, unless your mechanic also cleaned out the oil cooler. Which no one ever does, because that would be silly.
My guess to the no power problem would definitely be ignition. I had a very similar problem on my '87 SPG that lasted for literally a year - I didn't drive it much. After months of replacing EVERYTHING, I finally tracked the problem down to the vacuum unit on the distributor - it had become sticky, and sometimes would not advance or retard properly. Often, the car had no power until 2500rpm, when sufficient vacuum was generated to unstick the advance. This also caused various mixture problems, and the car would sometimes smoke (and often stink) from unburned fuel. If your mechanic was fooling around near the radiator, he could have inadvertantly disconnected the vacuum hose (easy) or damaged the unit from impact....
I'd start there, but I would recommend asking your mechanic to look at it if you suspect he may have done something. You don't want to have the problem fixed (or mess with it yourself) and take it to him later/afterwards - that'll just tick him off. Give him the chance to do the right thing, and go from there...
