Look for another car or sign up for a project Posted by Ari [Email] (#2847) [Profile/Gallery] (more from Ari) on Fri, 30 Dec 2005 16:57:02 In Reply to: '97 Aero runs on 3 cylinders-avoid?, 94cs, Tue, 27 Dec 2005 06:33:35 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
I would find another car unless you're looking for a project. It's always tempting to find a car with a simple problem, buy it cheap and fix it cheap. This may be a car to avoid.
First, it's been modified. I always worry. Yes, there are plenty of reasonable modifications and the possibility the car has been reasonably driven. Or it's had the tar beaten out of it. Do you have anything in the way of maintenance records? I wouldn't buy a car that looked and ran great without a good maintenance history. One with a major problem doesn't help.
Biggest reason to avoid? If it's running on 3 cylinders, one cylinder is pumping raw gas into the catalytic convertor. That will kill it in short order.
I haven't taken the time to read the other, most likely very good posts on this. But the bottom line is that at a minimum, the car has a problem. The worst case is that it has a stuck or burnt valve, possible piston damage, and possible cat damage.
And if the car hasn't been well maintained, this may very well be the tip of the iceberg (engine oil sludge, old coolant rotting the radiator, and slime in the brake lines).
So, if you can get it really cheap and it otherwise has a good maintenance history despite an existing major problem, and you're willing to take on a possible project car, then go for it. Otherwise, avoid the siren song of a dying Aero and keep looking.
