If it is a burnt valve, you can tell for sure by doing Posted by TonyJ [Email] (#407) [Profile/Gallery] (more from TonyJ) on Thu, 29 Dec 2005 11:27:34 In Reply to: '97 Aero runs on 3 cylinders-avoid?, 94cs, Tue, 27 Dec 2005 06:33:35 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
a poor man's leakdown test. First, do a normal compression check to find the suspect cylinder--- i.e to determine whether one cylinder is very low or zero compression. With the crank turned so both sets of valves are closed at TDC on the suspect cylinder, apply air pressure through the suspect cylinder's spark plug hole and listen in the exhaust (usual valve that burns) for leakage. I used this technique recently when our 97 CSE burned a valve while towing a trailer (search TonyJ posts and see photos in my gallery for details). It would have been $500 to have the head rebuilt at a local head shop, so I just checked head flatness, cleaned everthing (worst part of job), replaced both exhaust seals and valves, lapped them, etc. Using mostly eEuro parts, it cost a few hunderd dollars, including new head bolts and having the injectors mapped at Marren. The car has been running great since, even getting better MPG. Good Luck.
