seat motor question--long

I have spent the last few weeks trying to get the power driver seat working on my 1996 9000CS. It stopped without warning and, after reviewing numerous posts here, I came to the conclusion that it was the memory seat ecu. So I ordered a replacement from the bay, found out it was the wrong part. Then, I decided, after looking at wiring diagrams for cars with and without the memory function, that I could simply delete the ecu from the circuit and splice like colored wires together (example, blue/white to blue/white). I tried that today. NO dice. My reading of the schematics is that the seat motors use ground from the chassis and the seat switches simply interrupt positive. But even if I connect one of the seat motor terminals directly to the positive terminal on the battery, nothing happens. I used my voltmeter and I do have a 12 volt circuit, but nothing happens. Has anyone else tried this? There are also position sensors, with three wires attached, in addition to the two direction wires on each motor. Any ideas?
