it goes like that sometimes. Any older car you acquire has a history and to some extent you are working against that period in the car's life. And stuff wears out or breaks on any vehicle. Fortunately you have this board to help. I save a few hundred bucks a year from the knowledge gained here.
When maintaining and repairing any older car it's important really think through the problem. You have to recognize when to get new or used parts, what's truly worth fixing and what you can live with, and what is beyond your capabilities (or threshold of pain) so you can decide to pay someone to do the work instead of beating your head against the wall (know when to hold 'em, know when to fold 'em). But you come out of each experience more confident, even if you had a hard time doing something. The learning curve gets steep at times --usually on uncommon repairs like your seat motor-- but over time it flattens out.
It's important to have a good indy or two you can rely on. I have a Saab specialist and a general repair shop that both do good work and I can trust them.
