First of all, Saab 9000's give fair warning on all needed repairs except for fuel pump failure. With inspection and perception nothing should surprise you to the breakdown point. You will have had a warning that you ignored for some time in my opinion.
For safety, one should have spare belt and two cheap idler pulleys in the trunk at all times. I remove the inner fender after jacking up the passenger side, put breaker bar over socket wrench and slowely compress the tensioner(very easy if dome slowely and steadily). I made a special bracket which consists of two screws put through a bracket to hold compressed tensioner in-place.Belt can be removed and replaced with routing knowledge (on sticket under hood and in owners manual).
This will take an hour on the side of the road under ideal conditions with a steady surface to jack on. I recommend being pro-active and avoiding any side of the road repairs. If it is overdue, just buy the plastic pulleys and new belt and replace them all now in the comfort of your garage or driveway - have a beer and enjoy the money saved. I did see a dramatic increase in the replacement belt cost at one of my favorite site sponsor web sites recently........not sure why. A good belt is better than a bargain brand but I will shop around elsewhere now. Good luck!!
