My roadside belt repair story (long) Posted by Rod [Email] (#3128) [Profile/Gallery] (more from Rod) on Fri, 28 May 2010 11:32:17 In Reply to: Roadside DIY serp belt procedure ? I was camping up at Traverse City State Park in Northern Michigan last summer. We took out my wife's 9k for a drive somewhere and about 5 miles from the park I felt the power steering give up and the alternator light came on. I pulled over into a restaurant parking lot and saw that the serpentine belt tensioner bolt had sheared, causing all my problems. I figured I would be able to replace that back at the campground, once I got a new metric bolt from somewhere. But I didn't want to drive the 5 miles back to the campground with no waterpump. I didn't care about the power steering or the alternator, but the waterpump is kind of crucial.
So, in the trunk I discovered a short bungee cord. I took off the hooked ends and joined the ends of the cord together with a piece of wire. This was the perfect size to loop around the crankshaft pulley and water pump pulley. Not a lot of resistance on the water pump, so this worked like a charm. I drove back to the campground with no power steering, no AC and the alternator light on, but with a non-overheating engine.
Once back at the campground I got on my bike and rode the 8 or 9 miles to Lowe's to get a new bolt and a large breaker bar (I had a basic socket set with me already). Luckily the sheared off potion of the old bolt came out easily and it was a pretty easy job (not roadside, but in a camp ground) to replace the tensioner pulley and reinstall the belt.
Moral of the story - carry some tools with you, and be prepared to get your hands dirty...
