Today is a good day to recheck this, relatively cool out and cloudy.
With ACC on "Lo" and "Econ" the air coming out of the center vent is essentially the same as the outside air. Thermometer is within a few degrees and it "feels" the same as air coming in from an open window. So I don't think there's any significant air leakage from the heater core.
The situation is basically the A/C at maximum is able to blow air about 20 to 25 degrees cooler than the outside temperature. This is good enough to make the car comfortable when temperatures are in the 80s, but doesn't help much when it's 100 degrees out.
Pressures look good on the low side (27-30 psi), a bit too high on the high side (250-275 psi) at an ambient temperature of about 90 degrees, though I'm going by generic R134a guidelines here since I have not found specifics for this car. So the compressor appears to be working OK and there aren't any major leaks. Condenser is clear of debris, so airflow there should be OK.
Aside from the electronic ACC controls and R134a refrigerant this seems to be pretty much a basic type expansion-valve system similar to what you might find on a U.S. car from the 1960s or 1970s. With these symptoms about all I can think of is replacing the expansion valve and drier and installing a more efficient refrigerant. Though given the difficulty replacing the drier I may well make a pass at pulling vacuum for 4 hours or more on the old one and see what the results are.
