Weird a new voltage regulator would temporarily fix it. Definitely alternator related though. The only other thing I could think to check is the little wire that runs off the alternator to the gauge cluster. I've had this wire break causing no-charging symptoms. Otherwise it sounds like you're due for a new alternator.
