I had resistor pack loose pin damage from the overheated connection as well. I replaced the fan controller with a new one (they were still available from eeuroparts.com at the time), then fixed up the old one with epoxy and put it on the shelf for a spare since it was otherwise still working.
Yeah, definitely sounds like you have an AC leak. Don't overlook the service valves, they're a common source of leak problems and the plastic caps won't stop then from leaking.
I use an electronic leak detector. This one works well and is inexpensive:
