Yes, a condenser and capacitor are the same thing. If you happen to have a capacitance meter, the Saab value is 0.22 mfd. And it does connect to the negative side of the coil. You had the electronics training in the Navy? I've been working on a system recently for the new Sikorsky CH-53K helicopter, with NAVAIR as the end customer.
From what I know, the 1/2" spark plugs were used only on the early open deck engine and the NGK plug is a B7H. The closed deck 1500 and 1700 used 3/4" plugs. The former uses NGK BP7ES and the latter BP6ES, due to lower compression.
