Hi Glenn,
A couple of things come to mind...
1. Did this problem happen all of a sudden? Was the car running fine this summer and all of a sudden the temp gauge pegged? Or did it happen after something changed? Or were you seeing signs of overheating over time? Knowing that might be a clue.
2.Just as a check, start the engine cold and feel that the upper radiator hose is cold. Wait for the temp gauge to come up and feel that the upper hose is hot. This is another test of the thermostat as well as a "sort of" test of the water pump. You should be able to almost feel the water coursing through it.
3. As to the water pump- the backing plate can get eaten away over time such that the pump can't...well... pump- it just cavitates. How did that look? Are the vanes of the pump curved? Some aftermarket pumps have straight vanes which are useless...
4. Your pressure cap is way too high!
5. Could it be a temp sensor/gauge problem?
6. Clogged radiator?
Just some ideas. Hope it helps.
