Unfortunately, Saabs and BMW's are listed in different classes by the IIHS, so you can't really compare the following stats (they separate 2 and 4 door cars). However, the IIHS puts out a report on the money paid per insurance injury claim (collision and theft are also on the same report). The NG900 scored best in its class. BMW was average or a little better than average (depending on which BMW). They're listed in different classes, though, so we really can't compare stats. Supposedly, the 9-3 is better than the 900. And, yes, it has 6 airbags (the side impact bags are sort of 2-in-one, with the torso bag inflating first, then the head bag inflating.
As for which car to buy, if you'll keep a car for a long time, (1) it'll get outdated anyway, (2) little pleasures/annoyances become big pleasures/annoyances over time, so don't settle for less than you want, or figure you'll live with some annoying problem, (3) consider how you'll use the car (mainly, um, "spirited" driving, hauling things, snow, etc). I've got an '86 900T and an '80 99, both of which are out dated, and not as tight as new cars, but I still like the very well thought out design. In this way, they're never really out dated.
And, the dashboard is dark to reduce reflections onto the windshield.
