First of all the 9^3 convert is a great car, for me anyway, a long time SAAB driver and multiple SAAB owner. The Audi A4/S4 is not a convert, and I would not want to be seen driving a BMW so for me the choice was easy :>
You're right when you say that resale value is poor -- if your benchmark is MSRP. To see the real picture you have to dig deeper. Fact is, few buyers pay anywhere near MSRP, or even invoice, for new SAABs. Norcross knows their prices are too high, but rather than list a lower price they subsidize purchase with a perpetually ongoing series of promotions. For example, at just about any time you can reduce your cost by thousands with a combination of $299 lease deals, dealer incentives of several thousand $$, SAAB owner loyalty discounts of $1000, Zero APR loans, etc etc, etc.
If you compare street price of a SAAB to resale value, then the picture looks a little better than MSRP to resale. Of course you have to do your homework in order to know how much to pay; for example, dealers will tell you about the promo leases, but they won't tell you about the dealer incentives (currently rumored to be $4500 on many 9^3s and $6000 on Viggens).
If you need to finance your purchase then the whacky SAAB pricing will save you thousands. If you want to pay cash, then look for the dealer incentives. If you remain convinced that resale value is poor, then pay cash and buy a cherry one year old car from your dealer, who will have one or two on the lot from somebody who took advantage of promo pricing to trade up.
