I have seen and laid hands on the cut-away engines. There is no reason to say that the new Saab engine is less heavy duty than the old one. It is a "clean sheet design", not one that still carries remnants of the nasty Triumph-built motor that first appeared in the 99 a full third century ago. The engine is much more efficient - the power and torque output match the previous 2.0 designs with 2/10 bar less pressure!
NINES concluded after analysis that this motor was designed with a great deal of participation by Saab, to the benefit of all the GM divisions that will be using it! BTW, the Saab version has unique crank (forged steel, not cast iron), rods, pistons, head casting (die cast, not sand cast), and valves (sodium filled exhaust).
