I had a 2000 9-3SE and bought a 2002 325i when my lease came due last fall. I have not driven the new 9-3 so cannot comment on the new Saab. However, I can tell you about the 325i.
I think the 325i is special. I have an automatic which takes away from the fun, but I really cannot have a 5-speed any more. I paid around $33,600 (before tax)for a 2002 325i with premium pkg, auto, metallic paint, leather, and cold weather pkg. I like the sense of quality of the 3 series, the comfortable seats, the growl of the inline-6 engine, and the handling. It also has strong resale value. I will also say that the BMW is as good on gas (maybe a little better) than my 9-3SE (auto) was. I took a trip to Ohio in Dec. and got 28-29mpg on the highway. Not bad for a 6 cyl.
The Saab had a better auto. climate control system and was naturally better in the snow.
I drove the A4 (1.8T and 3.0) a couple of times before getting the 325i. I was not that impressed with the A4. I thought the 1.8T Quattro was underpowered. I also think the 3-Series rides better. The 3 is special in that it manages to handle well without having a harsh ride.
