I usually turn the key to "on" position, then put on the seat belt while the car makes the ding noise, before crank the car. It allows the fuel pump to build up pressure, and allow me to check and turn off all the acccesories such as CD player, hard-drive based GPS, AC compressor (Econ mode disengages the AC compressor on 9-5 and 9-3 equipped with ACC). Having the compressor clutch engaged during cranking would put unnecessary load on the alternator. The electric current during cranking is highly irregular, therefore probably bad for any device that could fail under intermittent current. Wife killed the CD changer on the Highlander under warranty probably due to this problem.
