Yep, red DI, although plenty of people run the black one with no issues. It's a lot cheaper. Or find a used red one to keep as a back up.
The fuel system needs to be looked at. There could be bad connections, cracked hoses, failed check valves at the tank, fuel rail connections up front. Some bits and pieces break down over time and need replacing. I think you need to drop the tank to access the pump and fittings, so try to do that when it's almost empty!
Horn may be an state inspection item--depends on your state. Not sure on the speedo in that car. Others here will know. But the speedo being inop means it may have a lot more miles than indicated. In some states it's an inspection issue.
Get a cat-back exhaust from eEuroparts or other site sponsor. They fit and last and go on easily enough. And you won't have to think about it again.
I'd also check the brakes and maybe budget for work there. Hopefully it may just need something simple like pads, but it may need rotors. And at that age and mileage it could need a caliper or two. Also check the CV joint boots, which are a PITA to replace.
It's tough to find a decent car for under $2000, but one you can fix up that is otherwise solid is good. Just look it over thoroughly and know what you're getting into. These are all that hard to work on, but at about 200K miles it will need stuff. He's asking $800 OBO, so figure on the work it needs and offer him $600. Work a deal.
And of course you want to change all the fluids (brake, oil, tranny, coolant) and the filters and spark plugs when you get it, and probably do the serp belt and pulleys, too. Then it's at a known state and you can move on. And have your son help you do that. My daughters help me on their cars.
