Interesting that you were able to drive 3 days with essentially an open cooling system and you never lost enough coolant to overheat or damage the engine. I would expect that once the engine heated up, coolant would be lost slowly and steadily out of the engine through the detached tank hose. (like if you open a tank cap or radiator cap on a hot engine, the coolant wants to come gushing out of the system) I suppose if you were doing short trips and/or limited daily mileage in cold weather for those 3 days, the loss was negligible.
