Yes, Dean that was one of the link I posted regarding my 3 wire O2 sensor. This sensor generates a voltage between one of its wires and the ground attachment. This voltage is then picked up by the engine management in a single ended (operational amplifier terminology)connection.
To keep things simple I think the 4 wire sensor is still one sensor. The sensor output is not connected to the sensor metal body anymore, instead it is connected to the two of the four wires. The wires are then connected to the engine management via a differential connection.
Is a known fact that single ended connections are prone to noise interference which can foul the engine management, whereas diffential connections are very good against noise interference (high common mode rejection, etc.) I believe it this the reason why the engine manufacturers moved to 4 wire sensors.
My believe therefore is that the ground connection would not affect a 4 wire sensor at all.
