I think Makis said this already in a different way, but anyway... the signal does not necessarily even need ground. It needs a signal line, and a constant reference. Two wires for the sensor is all that is required, regardless of whether one is ground or not. The more sofisticated the circuit, the less likely in fact that either sensor wire will be ground.
