This is from another forum where I regularly post. The poster is Portugese:
This accident happened in Portugal. One of the ambulances has written on the side "B.V. Esmoriz", which means "Bombeiros Voluntários de Esmoriz", the voluntary fire department of Esmoriz. Also the officers are GNR "Guarda Nacional Republicana", the Nacional Republican Guard.
Belive it or not this is not so unusual to see accidents like this here in Portugal. Well, this one is quite unusual due to the violence of the impact but I've seen cars that you couldn't even tell it was a car exept for the fact it still had wheels, but the rest was virtually unrecognizable.
The truth is here in Portugal road accidents are a very serious problem. There seems to be a "road rage culture" that the authorities can't seem to quarel no matter how severe the punishments are. It's like if you follow the rules you are considered a wimp, and the harder the punishment that more tempting it gets. Thousands die every year, specially during hollidays, and most of then are inocent people caught in the middle of accident cause by some SOB that had nothing better to do with his life than pretent he's very "macho" by going over 100mph or overtaking a truck in a two way, single lane, road with incoming trafic.
Actually I've seen these things so many times it doesn't even affect me anymore. It's like, "here we go again!" every time I hear the news. That's the sad thing. When one get's to a point where things like that no longuer have any effect.
Still even if statistically the number of accidents has been raising, the number of fatalities has lowered. I guess it's the result of improved car security. The problem is when people feel more secure they think they can go one step further, and sometimes it's one step too far.
Anyway this what is known about the accident:
