Europe Test Side Impact - this is why

At the request of the Germans side impact is part of the European Crash Test presumably because they get a lot of crashes like this on their autobahns where there is no speed limit.
Also the Europeans test front pedestrian impact and cars like the Honda Civic and Ford Focus are designed for this and do well in the tests.
American and increasingly Japanese SUVs are designed to kill pedestrians on impact and unfortunately the US Govt and Insurance companies do nothing about it.
SAAB redsigned the front of their models removing the headlight wipers because of the pedestrian impact test - the new front ends are friendlier.
Finally, note how well the seats have withstood the impact. Again in the US too many injuries occur because of feeble seats.
