Viggen Pilot, You are ignorant if you think that a free market economy has anything to do with giant automobiles that get lousy gas mileage in a world that is quickly running short of fossil fuel resources. As an American I am ashamed that we, as a popoulation drive such huge cars that guzzle gas with no regard for the environment or safety. Don't bother telling me that SUV's are safe, they're not and they are even less safe to smart motorists driving more sensible cars.
SUV's are status symbols, just like the McMansions that are popping up everywhere. Why does everyone need so much room in a car? What they heck are you running a furniture delivery service? It's a matter of vanity not convenience.
You're right it's a free market society you're allowed to eat all of the Big Macs that you want and you're allowed to get as fat as you want so that you can buy the biggest SUV that you can buy so that you can get into it and you can burn more fuel that will in-turn increase our dependency on foriegn oil.
Laslty, I'm curious as to how many people protested the war in Iraq owed SUV's. The same war that eventually will guarantee cheaper oil prices for the future?
