Gas will get more expensive. I'm not sure if you're old enough to remember the energy crunch in the early seventies. If so, you'll remember people lined up in gas stations trying to buy as much gas as possible because they didn't know how much more gas would go up the next day. At the time American car manufacturers were making huge cars with V8, four barrel engines that got lousy gas mileage. As a result people started buying small, more fuel efficient cars. Since GM, Ford, Chrysler and AMC didn't really make a small, fuel efficient car it left the Americans with no other choice than Japanese or Eupoean cars. What essentially happened afterwards was a govenment bail out for Chrysler and GM and Ford were laying off thousands of autoworkers. I lived in the Detroit area at the time and I remember seeing the soup lines for the unemployed autoworkers. It was 10 years before Detroit would get back on it's feet and make a "decent" car that got better gas mileage.
Will this happen again. Probably not to this extent since the big three do manufacture lines of cars that get decent mileage so they're not extending themselves. But the buyers are and when gas prices go up, and they will, people will be selling they're SUV's. Just remember America only produces 4% of it's own oil the rest is imported. How long can gas prices stay this low for Americans? I'd say not long. Maybe 5-7 more years at the outside.
As for how I'll feel when thew gas prices go up. I really won't be directly affected since I walk to work everyday (I live and work in the City) and I occasionally drive to meetings of which I get reimbursed for mileage. The rest of my driving is for leisure on the occasional weekend.
As for people making $15,000/year? Well, bicycles are cheap and don't require gas.
