Hey, I didn't know this was the socio-enviro-politico board...let me lob this into the mix...

Sean H, the same free market you vilify because it allows you choice of "giant automobiles that get lousy mileage" also allows you the freedom to choose small, high-mileage vehicles without resorting to artificially high economic constraints on your mobility. In some folks' utopian view of the world, 4 buck gas would create global harmony by decreasing vehicle usage, but remember on whose backs this burden falls...those lower on the economic scale. A market-based economy, while not flawless, is the best economic model which to incent development of higher-efficiency, desirable (read: consumer-driven) vehicles, while continuing to make mobility accessible across the broadest economic range of its citizens.

On your safety point, any SUV I may elect to buy only puts other drunk or wreckless drivers at risk, since I seldom drink (wife doesn't at all) and drive neither "fast nor furious". Therefore, for my family, the added bulk of an SUV would serve a defensive (not "offensive") purpose.
