SAAB didn't miss anything - they made cars, not trucks. On purpose, because that was their mission.
SAAB could have followed any trend that came along and sold more vehicles, but I bet that then it would not be known for its distinctive engineering as it is today. Posters on these boards fondly remember and/or care for 20 or 30 year old cars because of distinctive, endearing qualities. Do you think anyone will be still cherishing their 2005 SAAB SUV's in 2025? 2030? No, because they are to be a commodity (a fancier machine based on a Chevrolet or Subaru) that will be forgotten once the lease term is over and the buyer migrates to the next trend. Will rear wheel drive sport coupes be the trend in 2008? Then rebadge a Cavalier and give it nicer wheels and seats. Call it a SAAB.
The musicians Hall and Oates made a lot of music over the years and they followed every trend that came along. As a result they are known but not highly respected as a great act, (not disrespected either, but not great). They are back on the TV again this week so I expect them to be doing a rap song as that is what is popular. So now shall be SAAB; following the trends as making money is now the mission, not making unique cars.
But me, I'm waiting for a SAAB pick up truck. The 9-4x4. Can't wait.
