I have read all the posts, so far, and I suggest your son go for the Volvo 240 series or Saab 900 series around twenty years old or newer. My reasons? Very sturdy long-lasting cars, easy to work on, very fun and safe!!! to drive(hear that mon and dad?), parts readily available with modest prices both used and new, sensational Nordic character vs Japanese cars and their empty souls, both cars known for independent and educated ownership, and THIS SAABNET BOARD for his support.
Since the 240 is rear wheel drive and the Saab has a heavy engine transaxle unit in front, that would make a clear choice for him as a shop project. Early 80s 240s and 900s can be had for $1500 everywhere.
