Classic mechanicals are logically laid out and wonderfully easy to work on. VERY cheap parts. VERY abundant aftermarket support. Very advanced engine management systems for mid-eighties. Overall, probably the best car ever made for a mechanic to learn the trade.
Solid examples in excellent shape, lovingly maintained, are available dirt cheap. Cared for, these cars last forever.
Bought one last year. Did a ton of maintenance work, including some heavy duty suspension work (Bilsteins, cargo coils, etc.) in preparation for trip to Alaska. Having never worked on one before, I was amazed how easy everything was. Every little detail is thought out to make life easier.
