I agree with CrNiFe, PEI is wonderful, a very gentle place with lovely people. My husband and I are from northern New England, and we took a driving trip to Nova Scotia and PEI about 5 years ago. Cape Breton Island is spectacular, but overall we liked PEI the best, and we keep saying we want to go back there. We avoided all the Ann of Green Gables stuff, too appealing to the Japanese tourists. On the northern coast, the National Seashore is so peaceful, and the water is the warmest north of Virginia! In late June, we had the beach to ourselves. And the food is great there, much better than in Nova Scotia, where everything seems to be fried.
