Why this won't work Posted by ChuckD [Email] (#2127) [Profile/Gallery] (more from ChuckD) on Fri, 13 Jan 2006 11:50:26 In Reply to: Windows XP Question, Bob M, Thu, 12 Jan 2006 18:33:19 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
To all responders and Bob M:
Notwithstanding the need for SATA drivers installed beforehand, which they're not, as long as the SATA drive is installed with other IDE drives, it'll never be a "C:". Or it may start out that way but it's letter assignment will be tenuous.
Windows wants to give "C:" to the first drive, and IDE's get preferrence over SATA or SCSI. You may be able to trick it by first applying a ghosted image to it without any other drives attached, but somewhere along the way, you'll need to run Recovery Console, or do an emergency repair, and the letters will change, and you'll kiss your installation bye-bye.
You must do a fresh build of the OS if you want to change from an IDE boot (System) drive to a SATA.
Besides, as was mentioned, it's defintely a good idea to do a reinstall once a year anyway for the reasons mentioned.
