Your card is probably sitting on computers all over the place often unsecured often for years after you use it. You would be shocked at how badly CCs are handled especially by mail order and internet companies. Athough b/c of the CC companies really cracking down over the last year or so it is improving significantly especially among the larger companies but there is still a lot of weak spots and holes to be closed. It could have been stolen from the inside. I know one place where anyone who had computer access in the company had access to many thousands of CCs that were improperly stored and exported from the production system to the devel and test systems. Then there are people in customer service and the like who often have access and can query unaudited in many environments. Then there is the real possibilty a computer was cracked. I have seen some amazing stuff. Then there are the many other ways too.
You don't even want to know about your personal information like name, address, and SS numbers. The big finance companies and banks are pretty careful but anybody else that might have gotten it treats these as less importance than your CCs now b/c nobody is auditing them or cracking down on it. Some new laws and regulations are coming on line or in the pipe but this area is even farther behind than the CC stuff in 3rd party hands.
