A car won't really be hurt by sitting if you pay attention to a few things. 18 months really isn't long. But you need to take precautions:
As others note, padded jack stands are a good idea. Alternatively, if the tires are older just pump them to max pressure and let it sit on them. They will flat spot to some degree, but he can put new tires on when he starts driving it again. The tires will age and possibly start to crack no matter what, so he may need new ones anyway by the time he returns.
Either fill the gas tank to the top and use fuel preservative, OR drain the tank. Two schools of thought.
Change the oil, flush the cooling system and add a full load of new coolant.
Clean out the inside and make sure it's dry inside the car, otherwise it will get musty/moldy.
Wash and wax the car, and use a rubber/plastic preservative on door gaskets, dashboard, etc.
Remove the battery, or at least disconnect it. It's an overnite deal to recharge a battery when he comes back. Store it on a block of wood, even if you leave it in the car.
Go to WalMart and get a cover--decent ones are about $50-60.
Some people say to spray some light oil into each cylinder when storing a car, then replace the plugs. Don't know if it matters.
When he comes back he should flush the brake fluid before driving much.
