Remember to figure into your calculations the likely enhanced benefits you will be getting by working in the public sector. It's hard to beat a school system pension in the private sector. Of course it may not be quite as attractive if you're only going to be spending 10-15 yrs in there - just need to do the math.
I assume you're in the auto industry? My wife is in the same position in that she wants to get out because it is a declining industry in the mid-west, but even though her skills are very transferable, the only offers she gets are from other auto suppliers. So this might be a good stepping stone for you, even if you decide the job's not for you.
