Pension and medical benefit differences?
Public sector employment stands out in a couple of areas. Pension and medical benefits.
First, you and your wife are in jobs you don't like in a distressed industry. If you're let go in 5-10 years the price you'll pay for the job you can't find will be considerable. I retired just 2 years ago....my job was eliminated 1-2 years before I was planning to retire. I went through a layoff at age 50....I was lucky and landed in 4 months.
PENSION BENEFITS: Calculate the present value of non-contributory pension benefits that will accrue from the new job versus the additional benefits that will accrue from your present job.
MEDICAL BENEFITS: Does the new job offer post-retirement medical benefits? These are disappearing from the private sector, but not the public sector.
IN CONCLUSION...MOST IMPORTANT: You've stated that you and your wife are unhappy with your current employment in a distressed industry. Yet, this major/huge factor doesn' seem to be getting the attention it should. Personally, I can't imagine a few dollars (even if it's more like 5, 10, or even 20 thousand dollars) stopping me from moving on. For me this has always been criteria #1....the job has to be satisfying!
