I had an adult deer run full-bore right into the passenger side of my car a week ago, demolishing the side mirror. Part of the plastic housing remained, but the actual mirror was gone.
I've noticed something very unexpected, when I glance over to the mirror to check the side lane, since I don't see a vehicle, I assume that it's clear. I have to mentally check myself, and look over the shoulder.
I'm so used to only looking for a vehicle, not actually looking for a clear lane. Obviously, with no mirror, I can't see if there is a vehicle or not, but since a glance does not produce a vehicle, it must be clear?
Granted, I've been driving for 35 years, I suspect that my 18-yr old daughter would notice right away that the mirror was gone, you can't use it. But I'm so used to only looking for a vehicle.
The mind is a tricky thing.
