I realize the human/dog comparison may be a bit of a stretch, but I suffered a partial tear of the MCL in my left knee at age 18. First time I had ever down-hill skied!
Docs told me that surgery was possible but had side effects that may be worse than the ocassional short-term pain (usually related to sudden arrival of cold & damp weather) that I experienced 5 to 10 years later.
I opted to not undergo surgery and the knee bothers me less now than it did in my early 20's.
If your dog is limping less (the initial excrutiating pain of my partial tear subsided in less than a week) and doesn't appear to be in any discomfort, you shouldn't feel guilty by sparing him the trauma of a surgery that can be avoided. If it gets worse, then surgery may be the best solution.
