Its not going to "heal" by itself. The dog may eventually learn to compensate and deal with the pain, but that's not healing. My female Brittany had the same problem when she was 10. None of the vets were anywhere close to $4,000, highest was about $2,500. We had it done for about $1,500 by a vet that discounts for rescue dogs and is our main vet for the local American Brittany Rescue chapter. Afterwords, there is recovery and rehab. Our pup was put on a water treadmill program. With a dog of this age arthritis may also be a factor that will hinder recovery. If your in the Chicago area, I can recommend someone.
