I think Onstar is very worthwhile for the collision notification feature alone. Minutes count in such situations. When my daughter (a new driver) was away at college on the West Coast (we live in NYC) it made me feel better that she had Onstar in her 9-3 vert. She drove all over from N Calif to Scottsdale and I knew that if she needed help she could count on it.
Also, I find hand-held cell phones to have very poor reception at times and I have had experiences with Magellans freezing up. The integrated Onstar phone gets FAR better signal than a handheld esp in the mountains north of the city. Many times the Onstar-Verizon service in the car can get signal when the hand-held can't. I have Verizon service on both and an ATT Blackberry for business,
BTW maybe its just the NYC area. But people rarely call-in accidents to 911 here. Dealing with the 911 operators is just too painful and not worth it. I have hung up many times in disgust after spending too much time trying to tell them of an incident.
Oh and GOOD LUCK trying to find your cell phone to call the police after an airbag deployment. I'd rather not depend on "Good Samaritans"to call it in for me.
